Most of the causes that we support will be funded within recognised UK charities – but all will fall within our own charitable objects. The Trustees would seek to support local organisations that promote self-help and support in the community particularly:

Higher Education, including causes facilitating benefit from exposure to the capitals of greater learning and innovation outside Cumbria and others offering benefit from local apprenticeship schemes, particularly Hospitality.

Social needs, including causes alleviating poverty and increasing social mobility in rural areas.

The Arts, including encouraging appreciation of all the arts and sponsoring talented individuals in their early careers.

Our grants are generally up to £20,000 preferably for capital (but not buildings), revenue projects may be considered along with multi-year grants of up to 3 years.

There is a geographic restriction to the county of Cumbria, but more particularly to the area of the Westmorland and Furness Council (the old areas of Barrow, Eden and South Lakeland).

Applications will only be considered from national organisations where beneficiaries are based within our area.

We do not in general support causes that promote a single religion, political causes, animal welfare or statutory bodies.  We are unlikely to support individuals (other than through any Scholarship schemes) or sporting events.  We may support Community Interest Companies with a lower level of grant.

The application deadlines are 1 March and 1 September each year and the Trustees will make their decisions at meetings in May and November.  A sub-group meets more frequently to assess grant applications (other than multi-year) of up to £4,000.
